Lancrigg is a pet-friendly hotel in the heart of the Lake District

Finding pet-friendly accommodation in the Lake District with your dog should be a pleasure, not a chore. Lancrigg is in a central location which is well-placed for exploring and allows your pooch to join in too. We are proud to be one of the best reviewed dog-friendly hotels in the Lake District, welcoming you and your furry companion to our recently renovated rooms and extensive grounds. Our location close to beautiful Grasmere is a superb spot to enjoy a variety of walks with your four-legged friend.

We’ve picked out some of our favourite walks in Grasmere and beyond, from gentle Grasmere fell walks to breathtaking railway paths and scrambles. All you need to do is grab your walking boots and your dog’s lead and get outside to explore the heart of the Lakes.

Helm Crag walk

We have a popular Lakeland fell walk right on our doorstep. Easily accessible from Lancrigg is this moderate 3km Helm Crag walk. Known locally as The Lion and the Lamb, its two summit rock formations are a stunning sight. Taking in valley views across to Easedale Tarn and an impressive peak, this walk is the ideal introduction to hiking. If you like a scramble, you can ascend the summit rock with care. Don’t forget to take your camera to grab a picture with your pooch!

Grasmere & Rydal Water

Taking in Rydal Water, Grasmere Lake and the places which influenced Wordsworth, this is a walk to take your time over. Grab some gingerbread from the village shop and fill your pockets with tasty dog treats. This circular walk skirts the smallest of the lakes, Rydal Water, which sits at the foot of the pretty Loughrigg Fell. Skim rocks, contemplate the peaceful surroundings or wander through Dora’s field, planted in memory of Wordsworth’s daughter. You’ll return to Grasmere refreshed and ready for a good night’s sleep in our comfortable beds!

Brackenfell and Alcock Tarn

Another beautiful walk which starts in Grasmere before taking you and your dog North on a circular walk along country lanes, rocky outcrops and fellside paths. There are plenty of places to stop and enjoy the view on this 3.7-mile walk, and even a spot for a paddle at Alcock Tarn if you’re feeling brave! On a fine day look south to Windermere and across the Tarn to Grasmere village. You’ll finish at the village and have only a short walk back to us at Lancrigg.

Further afield

Using Lancrigg as your base, it’s easy to explore the rest of the Lake District and its varied walks. Many pubs, restaurants and cafes across the region are dog-friendly so you can enjoy everything on offer without leaving your pooch behind.

A popular dog walk runs from Keswick to Threlkeld via the Railway Path, which was reformed and reopened following the devastating floods in 2015. With stunning views of the imposing Blencathra, pretty lanes and woodland, this is well worth the trip!

For an easy scramble and panoramic views, take a circular route up Catbells and Derwentwater. The view from the top is outstanding and a great place to stop for a snack and some water for your dog. The descent is more gentle and you’ll finish the walk feeling invigorated and refreshed.
