The Top Grasmere visitor attractions

The area surrounding Lancrigg has a huge variety of attractions – so many, in fact, that many of our guests struggle to fit them all in during their stay. If you’re looking for the most special of Lake District attractions, be sure to spend at least one day focusing on Grasmere which has a wealth of picturesque walks and wonderful activities to take part in.

Explore the world of Wordsworth

Lovers of literature will adore the fact that many things to do in Grasmere are focused around renowned poet, William Wordsworth. Dove Cottage, nestled in the heart of Grasmere, was once home to Wordsworth and it has been preserved in the state it would have been when Wordsworth lived there. From there, take a stroll through the village to visit St. Oswald’s church, where Wordsworth’s tombstone remains. Be sure to drop into the Wordsworth Daffodil Garden too, which was created in 2007 in homage to the great poet. It’s also possible to explore Wordsworth’s later home, Rydal Mount, in the nearby Rydal village which is a short car ride away.

Sample Grasmere gingerbread

Avid foodies must pay a visit to the wonderful Sarah Nelson’s Gingerbread Shop. Sarah Nelson was a Victorian cook who created a unique type of gingerbread which is a little like a cake, a little like a biscuit and utterly delicious. You’ll probably notice many Lake District restaurants use the gingerbread in their dishes, but if you love all things sweet you simply have to sample it in its original form.

Row across Grasmere lake

Wordsworth described Grasmere lake as “the most loveliest spot that man hath found” and you shan’t disagree when you see if for yourself. There are plenty of paths around the lake for a relaxing stroll, but the best way to take in its beauty is to hire a boat and row across it. This is by far one of the most popular Grasmere attractions and not one to be missed.
