Grasmere is the perfect place to stay in the Lake District

You only have to look at a map of the Lake District to see why Grasmere hotels are the perfect place to spend your holiday there. The village and lake share the same name, and can be found north-west of Windermere not far from Ambleside.

Hotels in Grasmere put you right in the heart of the Lake District, almost dead centre of the national park and within easy reach of great walking routes and the region’s biggest attractions.

The Lake at Grasmere

Although the lake at Grasmere is one of the smallest in the Lake District its location makes it one of the most picturesque. A notable feature is the small island in the middle which was one of the favourite destinations of Wordsworth while he was staying at Dove Cottage.

Canoeing and boating is allowed on the lake, with boats available to hire during the Spring and Summer months. There is also an easy going walk around the shore, and with the lake being about 1 mile long it can act a nice stroll in the beautiful scenery.

Access to the much bigger and busier Windermere can be found at Waterhead, at the northern tip, just five miles from Grasmere.

With great Grasmere hotel deals available to choose from, it’s the perfect base if you plan a to explore further afield, whether that on on water or dry land!

Grasmere Village and Wordsworth

Grasmere itself is located in what’s affectionately known as Wordsworth Country, as the poet was a huge fan of the area – Poet’s Bar at Lancrigg is named in his honour.

A visit to St Oswald’s Church in Grasmere will allow you to pay your own respects to Wordsworth, who was buried at the church, before taking a walk along the River Rothay.

The Wordsworth Memorial Garden with its swathes of daffodils is also a popular visitor hotspot, where you can see more engraved stones – this time bearing the names of people who donated to support the garden’s creation.

Lancrigg itself also has close affinity to Wordsworth, as a spot where he would visit with his sister to create his famous poetry. Within the grounds of Lancrigg is memorial to Dorothy Wordsworth located where she would sit to write down the poems her brother dictated to her as he walked close by.
